Pakistan cotton arrival jumps by 3.5% in 1st two weeks of Dec

According to recent data from the Pakistan Cotton Ginner’s Association (PCGA), Cotton’s arrival in Pakistan witnessed an increase of 3.5% in the first two weeks on December 15 compared to November 30.

The report reveals that the overall cotton arrival in Pakistan reached 8.024 million bales, exhibiting growth from the 7.753 million bales recorded on November 30, 2023—an increase of 0.271 million bales.

From a year-on-year perspective, there was a substantial surge of nearly 74% in cotton arrival compared to December 15, 2022, with the current figure surpassing 4.613 million bales.

Pakistan is among the world’s top producers of cotton. To make cotton production more environmentally friendly—and improve farmers’ lives, Pakistan in 2008 became an implementing partner of the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI), which set a global standard for sustainable cotton.

Though the adverse impact of flash floods in the previous year, severely affected agricultural land in Sindh and Balochistan, leading to a 34% year-on-year decline in cotton production.

For sustainable cotton, the All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA) approached caretaker Finance Minister Dr. Shamshad Akhtar, seeking access to electricity at wheeling charges ranging from 1 to 1.4 cents/kWh and B2B contracts, recently.

Both Punjab and Sindh reported substantial increases in cotton arrival. As of December 15, cotton arrival in Punjab reached 3.957 million bales, showing a 5.9% increase from the 3.737 million bales reported on November 30, 2023.

Every year, cotton arrivals from Punjab surged by 43.2%, compared to 2.762 million bales during the same period last year.

Similarly, cotton arrival in Sindh totaled 4.067 million bales, compared to 4.017 million bales on November 30, marking a 1.2% increase. Notably, the year-on-year increase in Sindh was more pronounced, with cotton arrivals soaring by 119.8% compared to the 1.850 million bales registered in the same period of the previous year.
