Chittagong Port Authority budges on container weight limit in face of protests

The Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) has decided against implementing the new container-weight limit amid protests against the same fearing shipment-cost escalation even as the CPA had moved to enforce the verified gross mass (VGM) of 30.48 tonnes in case of both 20-foot and 40-foot containers.

This is as per media reports, which cited the sources from within the CPA as per which the CPA on 9 February this year issued a circular restricting the maximum gross weight of 40-foot and 20-foot containers to be handled at the seaport even as it ruled the maximum gross weight for both sizes of containers will be 30.48 tonnes inclusive of the weight of the empty containers while seeking to enforce the new weight in line with the ISO 668 seventh edition 2020-21 (in terms of dimensions, classifications, and even ratings of the containers).

Meanwhile, the CPA Director (Traffic) Enamul Karim, who signed the circular, reportedly could not be reached for comments.
